Best Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Sciton Laser Hair Removal img 1Ideal laser hair removal candidates should be in good overall physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about their results. Candidates may also be people who suffer from pseudofolliculitis, which causes chronic ingrown coarse or curly hairs.

Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Harrington may recommend hair removal using the Sciton BBL system, which provides another option for removing unwanted facial or body hair. Ask your provider for more information about the advantages of each option.

What to Expect

During your laser hair removal treatment, the treatment area will first be cleansed and any existing hair will be shaved. Then, a cool gel will be applied to the area to protect the skin. The Sciton handpiece, which has a smooth, glass surface, will be applied directly to the skin, passing over the treatment area. A laser emitted by the handpiece will destroy underlying hair follicles as it passes over.

Recovery & Results

You may develop some mild redness or swelling immediately after your treatment, but this usually resolves within the first several hours. Some people develop temporary blistering or pimples during the first few days following treatments. If you develop blistering, simply wait for the blisters to heal and keep the area clean and moisturized.

You should notice treated hairs begin to fall off after about 7 to 14 days. Do not be alarmed if hairs appear to be growing in the meantime. Because the laser can only disable follicles that are in their current growth process, multiple treatments will be necessary to achieve ideal results.

Sciton Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Q. What are the most common treatments areas for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal can be performed virtually anywhere on the face or body. The most popular areas for laser hair removal include the underarms, bikini line, legs, arms, back, upper lip and chest. If you have another area you’d like to have treated, chances are we can accommodate your needs.
Q. How many treatments are recommended?
The exact number of treatments depends on the amount of hair, the size of the treatment area and how well you respond to each treatment. Most people get anywhere from 4 to 8 treatment sessions spaced about a month apart.
Q. Do I have to let my hair grow out between treatments?
No. You should refrain from waxing and plucking your hairs between treatments, and avoid shaving for the first 3 days after each session. Otherwise, you can continue to shave your hair as usual.
Q. Is the treatment painful?
During each pulse of the laser, you may feel a slight pricking sensation, but most people find the procedure only slightly uncomfortable. Typically, no anesthetic is necessary.
Q. Is there any downtime?
You should avoid direct sun exposure for 2 to 4 weeks before and after each session, and keep the area clean and moisturized, but otherwise, there is no downtime required. You can resume your normal routine immediately following your appointment.
