SkinPen® Microneedling

SkinPen® Microneedling img 1Rejuvenating the skin’s surface can come in a number of different procedures, but SkinPen® microneedling is one of the hottest treatments in today’s skincare world. By creating thousands of tiny micro-injuries in the skin, this non-surgical procedure can stimulate collagen, improve texture and tone, and even improve the appearance of long-lasting scars.

SkinPen is the most versatile and comfortable microneedling device on the market, showing powerful results on all skin types. SkinPen is also the first device of its kind to receive FDA clearance for cosmetic use.

Best Candidates for SkinPen Microneedling

Candidates for SkinPen microneedling treatments can be men or women in good overall physical and mental health. Most people who get microneedling treatments hope to address surface skin problems, such as enlarged pores, fine lines or wrinkles, a dull complexion or minor acne scars. Microneedling can also help firm the skin’s texture, helping to improve minor skin laxity.

Depending on your needs, Dr. Harrington may recommend alternate or additional treatments to rejuvenate your complexion. Many people choose to combine SkinPen microneedling with PRP facial rejuvenation.” For those looking for a more intensive resurfacing treatment, laser skin resurfacing offers another alternative.

Real Patient Results

What to Expect

Before starting your microneedling treatment, your aesthetic provider will apply a topical numbing cream to your face to help keep you comfortable during the procedure. While you wait for the numbness to set in, you can read a book, check your emails or simply relax. Once you are ready, usually after about 45 minutes, your practitioner will pass the microneedling device over your skin. You may feel small vibrations where the SkinPen device passes and occasional pricks on the skin, but because of the anesthetic, most people report feeling little discomfort during microneedling.

Recovery & Results

Immediately following microneedling treatment, your provider will apply a cooling serum or lotion to your skin and you’ll be asked to avoid touching your face for the rest of the day. You may wash your face gently with water before going to sleep that night. Be sure to keep your skin moisturized over the following few days. Your face will appear slightly red for 2 to 3 days after your treatment, but it should only appear as noticeable as a minor sunburn. You may develop some slight bruising, which should fade within a few days.

Your results should gradually develop over the coming weeks and months. You may notice that your skin appears clearer, more even-toned and that your blemishes lighten or fade away entirely. Your skin may become firmer and plumper, diminished minor laxity or wrinkles. Most people get a series of 3 to 6 microneedling treatments, with each session building upon the results of the last.

Microneedling FAQs

Q. Do I need to do anything special between microneedling treatments to take care of my skin?
It’s always important to protect your skin from sun damage, but especially so after any treatment that temporarily increases your skin’s sensitivity, as microneedling does. Therefore, be sure to use sunscreen every day between treatments and keep your skin clean with high-quality skincare products.
Q. Can I wear makeup after getting microneedling treatments?
Yes. While we recommend waiting to apply makeup until your skin begins to heal, within 3 to 5 days of each treatment, you can apply makeup as soon as the following morning if you have an important appointment or event. Only use clean makeup brushes immediately following each treatment, as you skin will be highly susceptible to bacteria.
Q. What’s the benefit of adding PRP to my microneedling treatment?
SkinPen microneedling stimulates cell regeneration both on its own and when combined with PRP. However, adding PRP to your treatment gives you the added bonus of growth factors from your own blood, which will be absorbed into the dermis. This makes for greater potential for healing, particularly when it comes to scars, stretch marks and wrinkles.
Q. Can’t I just do microneedling at home?
There are some home devices you can use to perform microneedling on your own skin. However, our office is able to utilize longer needles than cannot be purchased for home use, allowing for a more intensive treatment. Also, performing your own microneedling treatments can be dangerous. The needles need to be completely sterile and a wrong move can cut or damage your skin, so we highly recommend reserving the treatment for a professional aesthetic medical environment.
Q. Can I get microneedling in places besides my face?
Yes. For the treatment of stretch marks, microneedling can be performed almost anywhere on the body, including the stomach, thighs and décolletage. Ask your practitioner if there is another area you would like to have treated.
