PRP Facial Rejuvenation

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a solution created by processing your own blood so that it forms a high concentration of growth factors. When applied to the skin directly after SkinPen® microneedling, a process that creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin and tissue, the PRP is absorbed into the dermis and stimulates new cell growth and collagen production.

Best Candidates for PRP Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation with PRP can be performed on almost any man or women who is in good overall health. Most candidates hope to improve upon superficial skin concerns like acne scars, fine lines, uneven texture or sun spots. Because microneedling with PRP rejuvenates the skin from the inside out, the procedure can also address minor skin laxity.

Depending on your needs and goals, Dr. Harrington may recommend additional treatments to help you achieve the best results. Many people combine PRP treatments with Sciton laser treatments to further improve pigment, acne or aging skin.

What to Expect

Before your PRP treatment, your treatment provider will draw blood from your arm. The PRP will then be separated from the rest of your blood using a centrifuge. A topical numbing cream will be applied to your face to maximize your comfort during the microneedling process. Once your face is numb, your provider will pass a device containing numerous tiny needles over your skin, creating thousands of micro-injuries. During and following this process, the PRP from your blood will be applied to your face like a serum, allowing your skin to absorb the growth factors.

Recovery & Results

Following the treatment, we will ask you to avoid washing the PRP from your face for a set period of time. For this reason, it’s best if you can schedule your procedure for a day when you’re able to go home after and relax. The next morning, you may notice some redness, mild peeling or swelling, but most people don’t find the side effects to be too bothersome. Any lingering redness or swelling should fade within a few days.

Your results should gradually develop over the coming weeks and months. You may notice a firmer, smoother skin texture and a decrease in scarring, fine wrinkles and other surface issues. Most people get a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced about a month apart for the best results. Each subsequent treatment should build upon your previous results.

PRP Facial Rejuvenation FAQs

Q. What’s the benefit of PRP facial rejuvenation instead of regular microneedling?
Microneedling on its own can also be a very effective facial treatment, but combining the microneedling process with the use of PRP allows for more prominent cell generation within the skin. This helps firm and tone your skin, so your results with PRP may be more impressive than the results of microneedling alone.
Q. Can PRP rejuvenation be applied to areas besides the face?
Yes. In fact, PRP rejuvenation is commonly used to treat stretch marks on the body. You can also apply the procedure to the décolletage or even the backs of the hands. Ask your provider if there is another area you’d like to have treated.
Q. Does the procedure hurt?
Because we apply a topical numbing solution to the skin prior to the microneedling process, most people report experiencing little to no discomfort. However, you may feel a vibrating sensation that can feel like a pencil tip pressing against your skin.
Q. Is it safe to use blood to rejuvenate the skin?
Yes. We only use PRP from your own blood for your treatment, so you don’t have to worry about diseases or contamination.*
Q. How long do the results last?
Because PRP facial rejuvenation stimulates healing and growth from deep within the skin, your results should be long-lasting. However, many people like to schedule repeat treatments every year or so to maintain a fresh, rejuvenated look.
